My dog cries, licks lips, and shows pain chewing. Could it be dental?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | unneutered | 13 years and 6 months old

My dog Kila started crying and yelping and we couldn't figure out why. We just noticed that he's been licking his lips a lot and whenever he does that a certain way or chews a certain way is when it causes him pain. Still not 100% sure if that is the reason but I'm pretty sure the problem is with his mouth or teeth. What do you reccommend?

You are correct that Kila could have a problem with his mouth causing his symptoms, and I would recommend having him seen by a vet. In senior dogs, dental problems can be common, and he could benefit from a dental scaling, cleaning, and polishing. Just like humans, dogs need regular dental care. and he could be suffering from severe gingivitis, tooth root abscess, or a broken or loss tooth. Have Kila seen by a vet tomorrow to have his mouth checked, and the vet can recommend treatment options.
