Shih Tzu can't poop, cries, full glands. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 10 lbs

cannot afford vet visit today, 2yr. Old female Shih Tzu, as always been seen for health concerns, she has never been able to clear glands when full, so have always taken her to vet! Yesterday she hasn't been able to go to the bathroom and cries! Am I able to push on the glands myself to break them. What do I need to do?

If she is not able to go to the bathroom and cries than it sounds like she needs more than just her glands expressed. She could be constipated and need an enema or her glands may be infected and need an antibiotic. If you were able to express her glands than you can monitor for improvement. If she doesn't improve than she needs to be examined and treated by a vet. You could add some canned pumpkin to her diet to increase the fiber in her diet to see if that helps. Hope she feels better soon!
