How to stop my scared German Shepherd from peeing when approached?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 9 months and 4 days old | 55 lbs

I have a problem with a 9 month old German Shepherd. She is constantly urinating when spoken too approached. How can I get her to stop this she has been a very scared dog since we have had her which was when she was 9 wks old. I have tried everything that I have read online as far as greeting outside getting down to her level nothing works. I am wondering if it's possible for her to have anxiety issues or something similar? What can I do?

If you have tried everything and nothing is working than your vet could prescribe medications to see if they help. If she seems very anxious than an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone, may help. You could also try an Adaptil collar and see if that helps. Hope something helps soon as I know it can be very frustrating. http://www.adaptil.com/us/#redirected

I would start with what I call happy visits. Every day walk in the room in a calm manner and say hello from a distance. Praising the dog verbally. Each day walk closer and continue to praise him. Leave a treat for him on the ground and tell him you have done so. After a week you should be able to make it Remy and provide him a treat. Eventually he will become calmer and used to your presence through the positive reinforcement. If it is also possible for you to be the one who provides his meals it will foster your bond. Best of luck!
