My puppy's ear is red, swollen, has pus, and a neck lump. What is it?

my puppy is 4 months andshe keeps scratching her ear it's very swollen red inside she keeps twitching her head she has puss coming out of her in her the same time that she has a problem with for her ear she has a big ball on the side of her neck

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take him to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent. The ball on the side of the neck is probably a swollen lymph node, this should go down with the antibiotic treatment.

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to an ear infection. It is very important that this is treated as soon as possible as this is causing him pain. You may clean the ear with an ear cleaner you can get at your pet store but that will not be enough to treat this. I recommend that you have Beau evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy. Good luck and have a good day!

Have him examined by your veterinarian. There may be serious infection and possibly an aural hematoma if she has been shaking her head. A hematoma develops when a blood vessel is broken in the ear flap due to shaking. This results in an ear that looks like a small pillow. Treatment is typically surgical. An ear infection can be diagnosed by examining a swab of the ear under a microscope. This can be done in the clinic. Infection can be caused by bacteria, yeast or a combination of both. The treatment will depend on the cause. "Simple" ear infections can be treated topically and usually resolve within 10-14 days. Place an e-collar (cone) on Nicki to prevent rubbing or pawing until she sees the vet.

What is this. On the side of his eat
It looks as though your dog has a fairly inflamed mass or cystic lesion on his ear. The only way to definitively determine the cause of the mass is through a fine needle aspirate where a vet draws a few cells out of the lesion with a needle (it's quick and relatively painless!) before examining the cells microscopically. From there, you will have a better sense as to whether the lesion is benign or malignant and whether or not surgical removal is needed. The other concern is that this lesion appears quite red with discharge and may be infected if your dog has been scratching at it. The vet will also be able to determine if antibiotics are needed at the time of the exam. I hope that all goes well!

I just noticed a very large red swollen spot in my dogs ear. It doesn't look like any of the pictures i found. It also has a bad smell.
If the ear looks like a small pillow, it could be a hematoma. Blood filling the ear will make it look puffy. The odor can be due to a severe ear infection. Excessive head shaking can cause a hematoma. Treatment is twofold. First, drain the ear or correctly via surgery then treat the underlying ear infection. Daisy will need to be examined by your veterinarian for confirmation and treatment. If it is not a hematoma, your veterinarian should be able to determine what is causing the condition after an exam and diagnostics.

It sounds like there may be a severe infection or something stuck in the ear canal. There aren't over the counter medications that will treat an infection that is creating pus in the ear canal. A lump on the neck below the ear is likely a swollen lymph node which is filtering the inflammatory cells from the infection. Mickey likely needs strong antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. Unfortunately there are not OTC pain medications that are safe for dogs. Mickey should be seen by a vet as soon as possible so that he can be appropriately diagnosed and receive the correct medications for the disease process he has.

Poor Ron! It sounds like he has a very bad infection. Unfortunately there is not really any options for home care for something like this and he needs to see the veterinarian. This is likely painful as well so try to get him in quickly. Dogs have various types of ear infections and the doctor will need to look under the microscope to know what type of infection is present and what type of treatment is most appropriate. The doctor will also provide medications to decrease inflammation and pain. I hope he starts feeling better quickly and that you found this helpful. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Oh my, that does sound like he is suffering from a major infection. With ear infections you have to be very careful, because things can look ok from the outside, but the inner ear canal could be full of debris that has just gotten pushed down in there and is harboring bacteria, yeast or both. Your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian for this and the ear examined using an otoscope. It also sounds like he has a major infection and inflammation now that has traveled to his muzzle causing pain and discomfort. He needs to be placed on both antibiotics (prescribed by your vet) and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication. Also a culture of the discharge may be needed as well, depending on how badly the ear looks in person and its response to the antibiotics. For future ear infections you almost always have to have not just an ear cleaner, but also an ear medication prescribed by a licensed veterinarian. Just using a cleaner isn't enough.
