My dog ate matches. What symptoms should I watch for after vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | 4 months and 16 days old | 57 lbs

My Ghontu ate a full box of safety matches yesterday night. I woke up and found some matches lying on the floor but i am certain that she ate the box with matches inside. But I have not noticed any symptoms as of now. I contacted my vet immediately in the morning. He gave him a dose of Atropine injection. Is there something I should worry about now?

Ghontu may experience some gastrointestinal signs (vomiting and diarrhoea), but it is unlikely to have any other significant sign. I would recommend to have him checked again if you notice anything abnormal and to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
