My dog limps and growls when I touch his leg. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a 2 year boy lab. He did something to his back left leg I looked and could not find anything that looked like a injury. He will walk fine for a little bit and then one day he will limp and protect it. If I touch it or pick him up he starts to growl. What could this be? Do I need to take him to a vet?

Poor Shadow! Since it sounds like the limping has been happening on and off for a while now, yes - I would definitely recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked. Your vet can do a thorough orthopedic exam to help determine what is causing the limp, and may also take x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem. Shadow may need pain medication or an anti-inflammatory to be used when he limps, or he could even need surgery to correct the problem depending on what is found.
