Cat's heart beats on the right side. Is it normal or dextrocardia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ocicat | Female | spayed | 9 months and 3 days old | 9.7 lbs

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. I have a cat, female, 9 months old, sterilized; I was holding her in my arms and I felt her heart beating on the right side of the chest. can she have dextrocardia or this is a normal variant in a young animal; from her medical history: she has a mild hepaocytolisis syndrome, cause not yet known and recently (1 week) she developed vomitting and diarrhea. Kind regards, Simone.

It can be normal to feel your cat's heart beat on both the right and left side when you are holding your cat. The heart is located on the left side of the body, but it's left of the center and not all the way over to the right. I am concerned that Dory has been vomiting and having diarrhea for a week. She needs to see a vet for that asap, as it's quite serious to have these symptoms for that long. She could have a foreign body, severe GI illness, or other illness causing the vomiting and diarrhea. Please take her into a vet right away for an exam.
