My dog ran off, now has swollen eye pouches. What should I do?

My friends dog ran off into the woods for a couple hours before finally coming home. He has scrapes and bumps everywhere but there seem to be big pockets/pouches next to each eye. They seem to have swollen up? Any ideas? Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered | 25 lbs

Poor Merry! I'm glad he came home though. It could be that he injured his eyes out in the woods, and that is causing the big pouches next to each eye. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Merry into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now so this can be diagnosed and treated.
