My dog ate something, is vomiting, lethargic, and won't take pills?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

My dog recently ate a flat iron and has lost all interest in food. He throws up food and water, and sometimes just throws up. I work for animal control and had him looked at by the vet there. She gave him fluids, a shot, and a 10 day supply of metro. He will not swallow the pill no matter how far I push in down his mouth. He is losing weight and lethargic. Constantly licking his lips and drooling. Any feed back will be appreciated

Poor Dough Boy! At this point, he should have an abdominal x-ray to make sure there isn't an obstruction, especially if the shot she gave him was an anti-vomiting injection and he is still vomiting. If the x-ray is negative than he should also have blood-work done to look for abnormalities as it is concerning that he is vomiting, lethargic, and losing weight. Besides, pushing the pill all the way back in his throat and holding his mouth closed until he swallows, there isn't much more you can do to administer an oral medication unless he would eat it in a treat. However, it sounds like he would just vomit the medicine back up. Please have the vet take a look at him again for a work-up. Hope he feels better soon!

This a medication that is used in dogs already but sadly the main side effects can be vomiting. The other side effects are dose dependent so depending on how many he got into will depend on how severe this is. It is best to get him to a vet for an exam so they can check his heart rate and start medicine to help with the vomiting
