Why is my German Shepherd losing hair, has scaly skin, and sore ears?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 years and 2 months old | 80 lbs

My German Shepard. She is losing a lot of hair and has sores and scabs all over her body. It kind of looks like scales as well. She has problems with her ears, when she scratches them she cries, when we bath her she cries. Her hips and tale, she never let's us touch them. I'm beyond worried about her.

Poor Raven! It sounds like she has a bacterial skin infection and ear infection, possibly secondary to allergies. If bathing her does not help, than she needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. She may need an oral antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, and ear medications to treat the problem. If needed, your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, culture, or skin biopsy to help determine the exact cause. Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Kea is having issues with her ears. There are multiple causes for hair loss on the ear pinna, including hair loss secondary to scratching, skin mites, an infection (bacterial or fungal), or an underlying medical issue (thyroid disease, etc) among others. I would recommend that she be re-evaluated by her veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her hair loss, have any necessary testing done (skin scrape, skin culture, biopsy, bloodwork) and start any medications she may need to resolve it. Good luck!
