Why is my cat's eye weepy and half-closed? Could it be conjunctivitis?

Hi. I have a female 10 month old cat I adopted from Spain she arrived three weeks ago. She seemed fine but the last two days I have noticed her eye is abit weepy and it's half closed. Could this be conjutivitis?

Congrats on your new cat, but I'm sorry Lilli seems unwell. Yes, it is possible that she does have conjunctivitis. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would have her seen by a vet today to have her eye examined and diagnosed so it can be treated.

    Hi, and thanks for your question. Although a picture would help to determine the underlying cause more specifically, that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to an allergy or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. Since you just adopted this kitty I would call the shelter and ask them whether you can bring him to the shelter veterinarian (or the designated veterinarian for the shelter) for another exam as this emerged this morning. This is likely a respiratory or an eye infection and should be seen by a vet before it gets worse. Depending on the diagnosis the vet will use various eye medications (serum, or antibiotic ointment, possibly Lysine, all depending on the kind of infection) and possibly oral antibiotics. Usually the body's immune system can fight such infections very well in relatively short time if caught early and before bacteria can take advantage of the situation. And congratulations to your new family member!

This often happens with conjunctivitis (aka pink eye), but can happen if the outside of the eye gets scratched or there is a problem within the eye. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a few different infections, but is commonly caused by a virus that most cats harbor and comes out during times of stress. These infections can become complicated with bacterial infections though and cause more problems. If the eyes appear worse and/or have a lot of yellow/green discharge, then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an evaluation. They will be able to better inspect the eye and provide the most appropriate treatment. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section) to help clean and soothe it. I rescued a kitten last week and she had her first vet visit last Thursday. Today we noticed her left eye has discharge with puffy eye. She is licking her paw and rubbing it.
What a cute little kitten! Gemma may have a touch of conjunctivitis (an inflammation of the pink tissues in the eye), which is usually caused by a virus or bacteria. This is really common in young kittens, and does require a visit to your vet. You might consider just calling them up as she was just there on Thursday - they may be able to squeeze you in soon. Conjunctivitis usually requires a topical antibiotic twice daily to prevent damage to the eye, especially if she's pawing at it. I recommend giving your vet a call so Gemma can feel better soon :)

What’s wrong with my kittens eyes , I found her today
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Clea. Her third eyelids are elevated in the picture you have provided. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure that she does not have a respiratory infection as this can cause the eyes to appear this way. She can also be started on deworming and be tested for the feline leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses at this time. If she is sick, then she will likely need to wait to be vaccinated. Many shelter kittens are exposed to various bacteria and viruses, and upper respiratory infections are common. I recommend that you help Nesquick keep the eye clean by using a warm wet wash cloth to gently wipe away the discharge. If the eyelids or conjunctiva appears swollen, then he should be checked out by a vet. Some viral infections of the eye can lead to blindness. Since most of these infections are viral, they will need time to run their course. Antibiotics may be used even with primary viral infections to make sure that we are helping the body fight off any secondary bacterial invaders. I would make sure that Nesquick sees a vet if he has a poor appetite, is progressively lethargic, or has a rectal temperature over 103. Squinting can be due to a variety of causes, including an eye infection, secondary to an upper respiratory infection, a wound to the cornea, or another underlying issue. I would recommend Stella be evaluated by a veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (eye stain, eye pressure, tear production) and start any eye medications if needed. Good luck!

I rescued a kitten from side of road over 2 weeks ago (about 8/9 weeks old). Brought it to vet for check up, had signs of cat flu and conjunctivitis. Vet gave an antibiotic injection and chloramphenicol 1.0%w/w eye ointment to be applied twice a day
I would probably recommend checking in with your veterinarian so that Lola's eyes can be examined. It sounds like she might have a herpesvirus infection. Even if the symptoms resolve cats are infected with herpesvirus for life and will sometimes have a reoccurrence of their symptoms during times of stress. It also sounds like she may have had a secondary bacterial eye infection, and it is possible that this infection has not resolved. Herpesvirus can also some times cause corneal ulcers on the surface of the eyes so this is another possibility. Finally, the tear ducts can occasionally become blocked and this might be the source of her eye discharge. Your veterinarian might want to stain the eyes to look for a corneal ulcer.

It sounds like Cat could have an upper respiratory infection. These infections are usually viral and kittens are often infected when they are very young before they are vaccinated. The respiratory virus can become latent and then flare up during times of stress causing conjunctivitis and nasal discharge/sneezing. I’d recommend having your veterinarian examine Cat to confirm. Occasionally secondary bacterial infections will develop and antibiotics are sometimes prescribed. A scratch on the eye is also possible but wouldn’t explain the runny nose.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Azra. Eyes infections are common in young kittens, but more serious problems such as a corneal ulcer can occur. The veterinarian will examine her and likely perform some eye tests to determine the cause of her symptoms. I would recommend calling other primary care veterinarians in your area and see if she can be seen sooner. Then you can always get her records and follow up with her normal veterinarian. If this is not an option, then I would take her to an emergency veterinarian. Eye issues can advance quickly in some cases. I hope this information helps!
