Prozac didn't work for my dog's separation anxiety. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 40 lbs

Our dog has separation anxiety. We tried Prozac with no luck. Are there other good medications to treat this issue?

There are a number of other medications that can be tried for Montana, such as Paxil, Zoloft, Clomicalm, diazepam, and lorazepam among others, but only your vet can decide if one of these drugs are appropriate and safe to use in him. You can try using a DAP which is a pheromone diffuser that can help dogs with anxiety. You can try using a Sentry calming collar, which releases pheromones when it comes in contact with his skin. I would discuss with Montana's vet if any other drugs are appropriate for use in him.

I'm sorry Montana has separation anxiety! There are several medications other than Prozac that you and your veterinarian can discuss. I have had good success with a medication called Trazodone. It is a prescription medication that you can speak to your veterinarian about. I also recommend consulting with a behavioralist to see if you can determine ways to help treat Montana's anxiety permanently.
