My kitten makes a reverse vomit sound when breathing. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 2 days old | 5.5 lbs

My kitten is 4mth, fully vaccinated, indoor cat & last night for a couple of breaths it sounded like croupe when breathing in, almost like a reverse vomit sound. Picked her up as she was laying in bed not running around & came her chest a rub, seemed ok (I on the other hand wasn't) watched her on & off for the night without incident. We went down stairs this morning & while she was scratching her cat tree it happened again. It's summer here in Australia & aircon on in house. Lilly looks well .

Poor Lilly Rose! It could be that she is suffering from a respiratory infection, which can happen even in indoor only cats. Cardiac problems can be another cause of breathing problems, but they are rare in kittens with it occurring in only 1-2%. I simply mention cardiac problems because Ragdolls are prone to them genetically. I would have Lilly seen by a vet for a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays. The vet can determine what has caused these episodes and can discuss treatment options with you.
