Can I visit my rehomed dog without confusing him about coming home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 35 lbs

My family and I had to give our Labrador away due to health problems of a family member. I'll be honest and say that it broke my heart to let him go and took time to heal. The man who has Finley now has said we can visit anytime we want. I am dying to see Finley again, but I don't want to confuse him by seeing him again. Would Finley think he's coming back to us if I saw him? He's been gone for a little while now. Many thanks

I'm so sorry you had to give away Finley, how heartbreaking for you! I don't think Finley would think he's coming back to you if you go and visit him. He's had time to adjust to his new home, and is likely very settled there. I'm sure he would be happy to see you, but he will likely view you as a visitor to his home. I think it would help you see him in his new home, and I would go visit him if you'd like :-)
