My cat keeps licking his paw after surgery. How to stop irritation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

My cat has his digit removed because of cancer. Since then he just won't leave the area alone, the skin is red and thin and sometimes he'll get ut enough to bleed. Dr has done more tests and no cancer cells. So maybe its phantom pains? Is there anything that I can do to thicken that skin there to help the irritation? Steriod shots only work temp, same as pain meds.

You could try keeping an Ecollar on Morgan to keep him from licking the area until it is fully healed. The skin may thicken as it heals. You can try using something like a Pawflex bandage, with will protect his food. You can get that off the internet, and I will give you a link to a site where you can buy them. Finally, you could consider getting a dog boot for him. While they are designed for dogs, there are ones that are for toy and small breed dogs that could fit Morgan's foot. It would protect his paw and keep him from chewing at it. https://www.amazon.com/Pawflex-Bandages-Medimitt-Pets-Medium/dp/B00N2RXK4G/ref=pd_sim_199_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00N2RXK4G&pd_rd_r=WF1V9ZRFYGWYVT79K2C8&pd_rd_w=fiHKs&pd_rd_wg=HZYnT&psc=1&refRID=WF1V9ZRFYGWYVT79K2C8 https://www.amazon.com/dog-boots-paw-protectors/b?ie=UTF8&node=2975316011
