My puppy suddenly yelps in pain and won't move. What should I do?

Our 18 week old boxer/beagle mix was acting like his playful self when we got home tonight and then suddenly started acting like he was in pain. He yelps when we try to pick him up and moans when he moves and tries to stand up. When we tried to look in his mouth he would yelp and snap at us. Now he just lays on his blanket and isn't getting up. When he does get up, he takes a few steps and then goes back to his blanket to lay down.

Oh no poor Cody! It does sound like he is in pain at the moment, and he could have injured himself somehow. I would leave him be for tonight and rest him, don't try to look in his mouth because you don't want to get bit, and monitor him. Should he still be acting like this in the morning, I would take him into a vet right away. The vet can do a physical exam, lameness exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing his pain. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options. He would likely benefit from pain medications, which the vet can prescribe, but please do not give him any human ones. They are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
