My dog has been diagnosed with kidney failure. Do you know of any artificial kidney research projects ongoing on Long Island...or in the area?

Research like this would typically be done at a veterinary school, and the only vet school in New York is Cornell. You could give them a call to see if they are doing any research on this, or you can give vet clinics in your area a call to see if they have any information on this.
