What are normal recovery signs to watch for after my pet's surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

Paws ended up having to have surgery to check for a blockage in his intestines late yesterday. He got home today at 4. He ate at the vet's office and was pretty cranky with them. I've noticed his breathing is pretty quick and somewhat shallow. I did get our vet on the phone and she said this is from the anesthesia. He seems to be pretty lethargic and has yet to eat since being home. He is hiding a good bit also. What should I be watching for during his recovery?

I'm sorry Paws had a blockage, but I'm glad he's home. It's normal that he won't want to eat tonight and he might be a little more lethargic than normal. If he becomes very lethargic, doesn't eat at all tomorrow, stops drinks, and/or starts vomiting food or water, then I would have him seen by a vet.
