Will my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel definitely get heart disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I absolutely count on my cavalier getting heart diasese. Don't all cavaliers eventually die from this, or do some not get it? I read that most end up dying from this because it's in their genetics. Is this not true? My families cavalier got heart disease at age 7. Thanks!

20-40% of adult Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have heart murmurs, most commonly due to hereditary problems with the mitral valve. While many go on to develop congestive heart failure, other dogs may be asymptomatic for a long time, or may develop another disease before the heart is significantly affected. Not all Cavaliers die from heart disease.
