Eve has bumps & scabs along her spine. She does not have fleas but is constantly chewing and scratching herself. She is less than a year old and looks as if she lost her black coat on the back half of her body, fur looks grey or light color. I have noticed that her black hair is growing back in certain spots. So her upper part of her body is long haired while the back half is short. What are these bumps and why does her hair look this way?

Poor Eve sounds very uncomfortable! This scratching can be caused by mites, ringworm, or allergies. I recommend taking her into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. As for her fur being different lengths, it could be due to the constant scratching and chewing. With these actions, she is continually doing damage to the hair shafts, and they are weaker because of it, consequently growing back in shorter and in a different color. Once the cause of chewing and scratching is diagnosed and treated, hopefully her fur will begin to repair and grow in longer.
