My old dog smells bad and has a bump. How can I afford vet care?

My dash hound is old - about 13 years. He has a foul smell to him and a bump on his spine. I can't afford a vet to get him checked. Any ideas as to what I should do? I am prepared for the worst. Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered
