My cat has an eye infection. Can it cause a false FIV positive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 11 lbs

We have taken in a stray with a bad and long standing eye infection. He has tested positive for feline aids but I was wondering if the fact that he is battling with an infection could affect the test result. Is it worth re-testing if we eventually clear the eye infection?

How lovely of you to take in Toby! No, this eye infection won't interfere with the results of the feline aids tests. That being said, false positives can occur, I would recommend re-testing with another test to confirm that he does have feline aids. I hope this helps!
