Do I need a doctor or therapist to get an Emotional Support Animal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I believe I qualify to have a personal Emotional Support Animal (ESA). I understand this topic is controversial, as many have pet owners have been known to take advantage of this privilege. How do I go about receiving this permission to register my pet? Do I speak to my physician? I previously thought I needed to be granted permission by a mental health specialist (i.e. therapist or psychologist) but with my busy schedule I am unable to regularly attend sessions, although it has been recommended

Yes, you should speak to your physician about this. My understanding is that they can provide a letter stating that you have a mental or emotional problem that would benefit from the presence of your pet as an ESA. I don't believe a mental health specialist is usually required, although your physician could clarify this for you if there's any confusion :)
