My dog has IVDD. Should he be fully crated or allowed out to rest?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 18 lbs

I gave 3.5yr old mini golden doodle that was just diagnosed with ivdd on Friday. The X-ray showed calcification in the disc. He is taking prednisone, Valium and Vicodin. The vet just told us to keep him confined, carry out to go potty on a leash. Should he be totally confined to crate, or can we take him out periodically and let him rest beside us?

I would be inclined to think that since your vet has told you to carry him out to go potty on a leash, the vet wants Rigley to move a little a possible, and that would mean total confinement to a crate. To be sure, however, I would give your vet a call to ask for clarification on this. I certainly don't want to say you can let him out periodically to rest beside you if that's not what your vet wants in terms of his treatment.
