Dog coughing, clearing throat, scratching ears. Could it be allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 25 lbs

6 year old Italian greyhound. Scratching at ears, no discharge, no obvious sign of a problem. However, he's coughing and clearing his throat for 2 days. He's eating and drinking normally. I gave him 1 tab of benadryl tonight. He's sleeping well with an occasional clearing of his throat. Could it be allergies? Spring kike weather recently here in southern New Jersey. Allergies and throat/sinus irritation could definitely be a reason for coughing/throat clearing and scratching at the ears. You may also see red eyes or clear discharge from the nose or eyes as additional signs. However if the symptoms continue for more than a few days or don't improve it is also a good idea to have Simon looked at by your vet. Foreign objects stuck in the nose or sinuses, illness, respiratory disease and even growths may also cause similar symptoms so it's good to have them checked out.
