Leptospirosis is frequently spread via the urine of infected rodents and other mammals. If your dog spends time outdoors or "in the field", the lepto vaccine should be considered. There are many strains, or serovars, of leptospirosis that can infect dogs. It is important to confirm with your veterinarian that the vaccine protects against the 4 most common serovars as opposed to a vaccine that has only 2. An initial vaccine is administered and followed up with a booster 3-4 weeks later, then yearly afterwards.

If they only had a single vaccine at that age, any protection is incomplete. Depending upon when they last had contact, vaccination will be recommended to prevent them from contracting infection in the future. If contact was close and within the last few days, your vet may recommend preventive antibiotics first. Lepto vaccine is only protective if given before exposure and the full course is given as directed

Yes, lepto vaccines are recommended every 12months and if they have not received them within the last 10-12months I would recommend scheduling booster vaccines urgently due to the high risk of transmission. Be aware it is also possible for humans to contract the same disease (Weils disease in people)
