Dog allergic to rabies vaccine. When to take him to emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 35 lbs

My dog had the rabies shot at noon today. He's shown symptoms of some type of allergic reaction. Symptoms include redness in eyes and face, mild swelling of face which stopped a few hours after, heavy, noisy breathing which also stopped, and also had hives on his belly later on. I gave him two Benadryl within the last 6 hours tonight. Some symptoms stopped and others digressed but are still noticeable. How long should I wait until taking him to an emergency vet?

Signs may come back after Benadryl efficacy has decreased. Next 8 hours would e a kind of cut off. If not coming back the signs will disappear. Remember to record this reaction on his vaccination card.
