My dog is acting strange after neuter surgery. Is he still in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

Yesterday, my dog was neutered and the clinic and he's recovering at home now. However, he's been behaving strangely after the operation. When I tell him to get up or move, he refuses. He'll only move when I force him to. Sometimes, he'll start shaking or whimpering for no reason. He still eats and drinks, but way less than he usually does. These symptoms seem to get worse when he has his e-collar on too. He takes pain meds, so I don't understand what the problem is.

He may still be experiencing some pain and probably does not like the E-collar. You could call your vet and see if he/she could add an additional pain medication or change medications to see if it helps at all. Hopefully, he will be back to normal within a few days.
