Why is my senior dog struggling to walk and his legs give out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered

My 13 year old pom has a collapsed trachea and an enlarged heart and under medication for those. He also keeps coughing esp when excited or upset. He eats normally and his bowels are ok. Up to a few days ago he has been active and enjoys walking. Then suddenly he has trouble getting up and moving or walking. His limbs just give out. He is in no pain and allows us to carry him. The vet saw him earlier and said it has nothing to do with his other issues, but gave no advice or explanation. Pls help

Poor Tyler! If it has nothing to do with his heart or trachea, then it may have something to do with his joints. He may be suffering from arthritic pain which over time has lead to muscle atrophy and weakness of his hind legs. You can try joint supplements (i.e. Dasuquin) and look into water therapy or similar physical therapy services available in your area to help build up his muscle strength. Then you should discuss with your vet about some other medical treatments that are safe for him, considering his medical history. A radiograph if his hind legs will also confirm a suspected arthritis and determine the degree of arthritis there to help tailor his therapy recommendations. I hope your fur baby gets proper care soon so that he can have a better quality of life. Best wishes.
