Is my new kitten's smell upsetting my cats? How to make them friendly?

I had new kitten for 2 weeks (age about 5 weeks old). My two other cats were offensive at first, then became calm down after 2 weeks. They even begin to butt sniff the kitten. But after sniffing, they just step back and walk or run away shockingly. Is it the smell of the kitten that upsets them? How to make them more friendly with each other?

Your cats are still getting used to the smell of the new kitten, and they are still unsure of her, so they run away. It's fine that they do this, as it's normal behavior and much better than aggression. I would reinforce the friendly behavior. When you see them approach the kitten and act friendly towards her, praise them and give them treats. This will make them associate contact with the kitten as a positive experience, and it will encourage them to do it more.

    Hello there! I suspect Nala is probably smelling your new kitten's smell on you too so she is reacting to that. She may also just be over sensitive and aware right now since there is a new kitten in the house. Therefore she is reacting to everything. It sounds like it's only been a short time since you introduced them and this is normal behavior at this point. I would give it more time. Keep doing what you are doing by introducing smells and I they will probably work it out. Especially since they are both young. Younger animals tend to adapt more easily and more quickly too. It sounds like Griffin is VERY interested and excited about the new kitten, and is likely trying to check her out. If he gets too in her face, I would definitely break it up and distract him with a toy or treat elsewhere. Making sure your kitten has places to escape such as a high up perch or beyond a baby gate where Griffin can't get to is also a good idea. It is also best to make sure pup and kitten are always supervised when together as even the friendliest dog may accidentally injure a tiny kitten without meaning to!

This is very normal behavior. Make sure you provide plenty of litter boxes and food and water bowls to decrease the stress and competition of the kittens. Also, you can put some feliway diffusers in their room to help calm them. Feliway is a cat pheromone to help calm them but it doesn’t work on everyone. Give them some time and hopefully they will start to warm up to each other. I hope this helps!

It can take quite awhile for adult cats to get used to the idea of having a new cat around. I would expect that Oscar will act more like her usual self with time. In the meantime, you could try confining the new kitten to a room for a period of time each day so that Oscar can spend some time with you alone. You should never force any interaction between Oscar and the kitten, and should make sure there are plenty of escape routes (cats especially like to be able to jump somewhere high) whenever they are together. Finally you may want to consider a pheromone product like Feliway that could help with anxiety. Good luck!

It is not uncommon for animals of the same sex to take longer to become friendly with one another than animals of the opposite sex. I find it to be more common in females than in males. They may see each other as competition for the male's attention. It may also be a simple territorial action that your established cat is making. I would consider perhaps a continued slow introduction to one another under your supervision. Cats be trained just as dogs (a little harder) with positive reinforcement. Whenever your kitties are acting nicely, they should be rewarded with praise, toys, and treats. Hope this helps!

I have a one year old female deaf cat and just got a 10week old kitten my older cat isn't getting along with the new kitten how can I get them to be friend? Would they ever be friends?
Often new cats can take a while to get used to one another. If you still have the opportunity, I would try to reintroduce them slowly. Keep them in separate rooms at first. This will allow them to be near each other, smell each other, but not touch or injure one another. After a few days, I would place them in a room together with the kitten in like a large dog crate for a while. This will accomplish the same goal as above but allow for closer contact and touching. Have some supervised sessions when they are loose together, rewarding any positive behavior by both of them with praise and treats. Cats respond the same way as dogs do to positive reinforcement in many cases. If the supervised sessions are going well, you should hopefully be able to integrate the two of them fully after a while. Unfortunately, there are some cats that simply do not do well with others in spite of training and behavioral modification. If this is the case, the hope is that the two will simply ignore

Moving into a new home is often frightening for a kitten, and it will take time for Amber to get used to her new home and you. I would give her lots of love and attention when she approaches you, including treats. This shows her that coming up to you is a good thing. Give her treats when she allows you to touch her. I would not try to approach her yourself, allow her to come to you. As she becomes adjusted to her home, she will eventually allow you to approach her.

Separate them for a few days, then gradually reintroduce them. First, allow them to sniff and hear each other through a closed door. Do this for ever increasing periods of time. Next, allow them to see but not reach one another. Progress to having one in a closed carrier in the same room. Correct any negative behavior immediately. Praise and reward them as they progress. Finally, a physical introduction can be attempted. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, may help decrease any anxiety. You can also switch their bedding so they get used to the other's odor. Be patient and be consistent.
