Is surgery complicated for a dog's pea-sized lump under skull skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 5.5 lbs

Dear vets, thanks to dr. Lindsey Edwards's answer to me, I forgot to mention in my last question that the small mass like a pea protuberant on the top of my dog's skull was under the skin, will this make the surgery procedure a bit complicated and difficult to remove the mass ? Thanks!

Hi there, not sure about the previous answer of my colleague, but it sounds like the surgery won't be more complicated than previously thought. The procedure will be slightly more invasive, but other than that will be the same.

I can certainly understand being worried about your fur baby! Just because a lump is under the skin doesn't mean it's attached to the bone, and the vet would let you know if they felt that they needed to remove bone to get fully remove the lump. The vet wouldn't tell if the surgery was minimal risk if it wasn't, so it likely is a simply surgery. Even though it doesn't seem to affect your boy, I would trust your vet's opinion to have it removed. Try to relax, and trust your vet. Good luck with the surgery, I hope it goes well :-)
