Is my senior dog's cheek lump related to her dental problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 16 lbs

My 14 year old Jack Russell has had tooth problems in the past requiring surgery. She has had a lump that has been showing up alternating on both cheeks for the past few months but it goes away if we give her Benadryl. Our Vet wants to do $400 of mouth surgery and pull most of her teeth. Can you tell me what the chance is that this is not just a tooth problem. We hate to put her through the surgery at her age (plus the expense) if she may have something else wrong too. Thanks!

The lumps showing up intermittently and eventually responding to Benadryl seem unrelated to a teeth problem ( which is probably due to severe tartar accumulation and gum disease). Depending on the type of teeth problem she may need surgery or not, not easy to say to be honest. Unfortunately in Tori's case a consultation request with us were you can upload pictures is necessary to give you more specific answers and detailed suggestions.
