How to treat dog blackheads on jowls and lips when wipes don't work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 28 lbs

My dog is four years old and he's never had any acne problems but in the last 6 months he has really bad blackhead breakout lining his jowls and his upper lip around the corner. My question is how do I treat this problem? I took him to my vet because I thought it was a yeast infection and she said no, its acne and to wipe it with face wipes but that didn't help at all. Any suggestions?

You could give him a bathe with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps. If not, he should be rechecked by a vet to determine the cause and treatment. It sounds like he could have a bacterial and/or yeast infection so oral medications may be necessary. If your vet is not able to diagnose the problem and treat and then you could go to another vet for a second opinion. He may need an antibiotic, antifungal, and/or an anti-inflammatory to help treat the problem.
