My cat has a black, bloody back wound with fur loss. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

My cat has some sort of flesh wound (thats what I'm calling it for now) on her lower back right before her tail and it's ripped and black and is very unhealthy looking. There is a loss of fur around that area, and it's black and bloody. There also is a spot on the skin which is exposed from the loss of fur, the skin is also very red and infected looking. It doesn't look very good and I really would like to know what's wrong with my cat and how serious this is.

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Jade regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.
