My senior dog has labored breathing and cough. Can I give her human antihistamines?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My 12yr old female mini doxie has developed periodic labored breathing and cough. We have recently moved from the AZ high mountain desert to the desert floor. My husband was her primary human and recently died. Our other larger male doxie also had symptoms but has responded well to some OTC supplements meant for dogs. Can I give her human antihistamines? She weighs almost 10 pounds.

First off, I am so sorry that you recently lost your husband! Please accept my condolences for your loss. I would not give Blaze any human antihistamines. In a senior dog like her, this labored breathing and cough could be caused by something serious such as cardiac disease, respiratory disease, or cancer. Human antihistamines would not treat these causes. I would have Blaze seen by a vet today or tomorrow for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. Doing these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing Blaze's labored breathing and cough, and can discuss treatment options with you.
