My dog just had puppies. Should I worry she hasn't pooped after birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Two days ago my female dog delivered 2 healthy pups. She's very attentive with them. She's been drinking lots of water and eating right. She's peed several times but has not pooped. She has been letting out stinky gases. Now one vet has told me that I should be worried because not pooping is abnormal. But a different vet has advised me not to worry because constipation after labor is normal. So is there a precise answer? I don't know if I should be worried. She seems to be okay & hasnt complaine

Digestive disturbances are common after birth but 2days is unusual for a nursing mother although some are very reluctant to leave pups to relieve themselves. I recommend taking her out on the lead for at least 15mins and monitor closely for any straining or discomfort
