Why is my dog's eye irritated, darkening, and starting to close?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 21 lbs

A couple of weeks after receiving my dog, I noticed an irritation on the around his eye that caused it to darken the outside of his nose down towards the bridge of his nose. His eye is now starting to close. Does anyone know what this is and his pet profile picture is what his eye looks like.

It is possible that Saska has an eye infection that will need to be treated with antibiotic ointment. Another possibility is an autoimmune disease, which can also likely be managed with ophthalmic ointments. Saska should be seen by a veterinarian or a veterinary ophthalmologist as soon as possible for appropriate treatment to be prescribed.
