How do I treat my American Bulldog's open, bloody chin infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 70 lbs

Hi there, my dog usually has some small wort-ish looking bumps on his chin, but I noticed today that they were open and a little bloody. I'm not sure if he scratched them or bit his lower lip when I wasn't looking. He has large lips with wrinkles that are difficult to clean because he is an American Bulldog. How should I treat the small wound and open skin? Thank you!

It sounds like he has a bacterial skin infection. You could try to clean with a chlorhexidine wound solution but he might need an oral antibiotic to treat. Have your vet take a look at him to determine the best treatment. Your vet can prescribe an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory, if needed. You could also use Mal-A-Ket wipes in his folds to keep the area clean and decrease infections from developing.
