My dog licks his swollen penis when I leave. Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 20 lbs

My dog (2) has been licking his penis when we leave him....that it is swollen and red and often even blood spots where he has been laying...it always goes away in a day or too if we are home....I'm wondering if it is just separation anxiety

This could be separation anxiety, but I would be more concerned that Boomer has a medical illness causing this behavior such as a UTI or bladder stones. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday for a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis. Should a medical illness be diagnosed, the vet can prescribe a treatment option for it. If not medical illness is found, the vet can discuss behavioral options for Boomer.
