My dog has welts, on prednisone. Is heavy breathing normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 50 lbs

My dog was prescribed prednisone 10 mg for an allergic reaction to something unknown. He broke out in welts everywhere and we also have been giving him benadryl for it. Should I be worried these reactions may not go away and can kill him? He is also breathing heavy. Is that normal?

While allergic reactions can reoccur it can be very difficult determine what is triggering them. It is very rare for dogs to develop life threatening anaphylactic reactions, and the biggest concern with an allergic reaction is swelling around the throat which does not happen often. If you think Koda is having difficulty breathing you should see a veterinarian, but prednisone can sometimes cause panting.
