Is raw dog food protein lower than kibble on an as-fed basis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, Are commercial raw diets lower or higher in protein than a typical kibble containing around 25% protein? When I look at the label of raw food it usually says 12-13% protein and 70% moisture. Since it has so much more moisture is it actually Lower in protein on an as fed basis? I understand on a dry matter basis it would be more protein. But since it isn't being fed that way, is it actually less protein then? I don't feed raw currently, but I used to so I'm just curious. Thanks!

Kibbles usually contain around 10-15% moisture only, which makes them much more concentrated in proteins, but if you would reduce the moisture content in the raw diet i'm not sure you would get less proteins. do not forget that a dog eats much less kibbles (in quantity) than raw food and will drink more water when eating kibbles, to compensate for the lack of moisture.
