Why does my dog's face have a rapidly growing red/black skin infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Terrier | Female

We have a older dog we rescued and took her to the vet a while back-he put her on Mometamax 15g and antibiotic. I would like to send a picture it is so aweful. We put a halo on her to stop her from rubbing on carpet and digging at it-but she still has managed to run her skin to bone from tear duct to bottom of her nose on outer lining it looks like red and black mushrooms or moldy black bubbling rot growing rapidly. I hope someone knows what this is. She seriously looks like a zombee dog.

Oh poor Doja! You have got to get her to stop scratching it. She may need a bigger E-collar. I think it would be best to take her back to your veterinarian and discuss skin scraping, cytology and a culture. She may have a fungus or resistant bacterial infection which would not respond to the prescribed medications.
