My dog has sudden neck pain. Can I give prednisone if vets are closed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

My 5 year old min pin was fine this morning now seems that he won't move his neck one way if he does he whimpers and yikes. His neck seems alittle swollen or maybe it's the way he is holding it. Not sure. Any advise as all of our vets are closed for the weekend. I have some prednisone 5 mg I was thinking of giving him but is that bad or to strong. He is about 10lbs. He is not doing anything but lying around holding resting his head in a certain way. He will go outside as long as we carry

No, I would not give Rocky the prednisone. It may not be safe to give to him, and you could cause harm to him by giving it. If you have to carry him outside, he needs to see a vet sooner than Monday as he sounds very painful. There will be vets on call for the weekend for emergencies, and I would call around local clinics to find the vet on call. The information to reach a vet on call is using on their answering machine or website. You can also see if there is an ER vet in your area.
