Dog poop has green beans. Can dogs digest veggies? How often to feed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I've been adding cooked frozen green beans to my dogs food for a couple days and her stool is firm but I'm seeing strings of green bean in her stool and it's mushier in the center with a green tinge in the center. I'm thinking she just has a problem digesting veggies or something. I was adding them to add bulk to her meals since she only gets fed 2/3 of a cup of kibble per day. Is it ok to just feed her once per day and not twice per day? The food I feed her already has ground cooked veggies.

Dogs should eat twice a day. It helps prevent bloat in dogs when they have two meals a day of equal size rather than one big meal. While dogs can eat plant material, they are carnivorous. This is show in the design of their teeth. They have sharp, blade like molars that are designed for slicing food rather than grinding it. Herbivores, like cows, have molars that are flatter and are made to grind up the plant material. In addition, their digestive system is designed to digest protein and fat, and due to that, they have trouble digesting produce. Produce should therefore be pureed to help them fully digest it. I recommend pureeing the green beans, which may help your dog digest them better.
