My bird wants to go back to the cage after taking him out for a short while. Is this good or does it mean he doesn't trust me enough?

The fact that Summer allows you to take him from his cage means there is trust. Be patient with him. He may want to go back in for a drink or a meal or to use the bathroom. Don't force him to be somewhere or stay outside of his cage if he doesn't want to. Gradually increase the length of time you have him outside the cage. Provide a small treat or reward after each time.
