Why does my pit bull keep getting bleeding ear sores that won't heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 10 months old | 85 lbs

My pit bull has sores on his ears on the outside of them. When we rescued him they were very badly irritated and after bathing him they healed up and have not bothered him until now. This has been two years since we rescued him they seem to start healing up and then he either scratches them or the other pit we have with him in the backyard licks them until they bleed again. I have been putting peroxide on them every night and it seems to be helping because they are dry in the a.m. Any suggestion

He could have an infection and/or allergic dermatitis. Since this has been going on for a couple years, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or anti-inflammatory to treat. He may need to stay on an anti-histamine long term if it is related to allergies.

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take Bella to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.

The ear looks very red and irritated so he should be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection and your vet can prescribe medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-fungal, and an anti-inflammatory to treat.
