Should I neuter my male dog for health or is it a personal choice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

Hi I have a male dachshund, he is 8 month old, and my friend say I should consider neutering him or he will get some disease in future . Is this true? I am a responsible owner and always watch him and actually there is no female dog around him, so you recommend neutering for his health or it is personal choice. Thank you

I definitely recommend neutering Caesar. It's certainly best for his health, as it completely the eliminates the chance that he will develop testicular tumors, and will have a significant reduction in the chance of prostate problems later in life. There are also behavioral benefits, such as eliminating his desire to roam to find females with which to mate. I would have him neutered as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

We do recommend neutering of male dogs for several reasons. We can decrease the chance of prostatic disease by neutering. We can also eliminate the chance of testicular cancer/disease. We decrease the incidences of behavioral problems/aggression and we also decrease the chance of your dog to roam/escape the home. There is no evidence that dogs who are neutered will be unhappy or sad or have a lower quality of life. Many male dogs who are neutered will continue to mount objects if this has become a habit for him, so he may continue this behavior. I would recommend neutering.
