Hello, My roommate's puppy had Parvo back in early August 2016. I am thinking about getting a dog and was wondering if it's okay to bring a puppy into the apartment now? We bleached the kitchen area and threw alway all the toys and bowls back in August. What is the recommended minimum age of a puppy I could safely bring into the apartment? I am also looking at older dogs as well but just want to take precautions in case I end up with a young puppy. Thank you, Sabrina

The virus has a shorter lifespan indoors and can survive for about 2 months. If you have cleaned properly and it has been since august than it should be safe to get a puppy. Just make sure to have the puppy vaccinated prior to bringing home and follow the protocol as directed by your vet. Puppies should be vaccinated with a distemper/parvo starting around 6-8 weeks and every 3-4 weeks until 15 weeks of age.

I typically recommend adopting either a fully vaccinated dog after having parvovirus in the house, or waiting at least 6 months before bringing an unvaccinated puppy into the house. Unfortunately there are some areas that just can't be disinfected, and the virus can last for a long time. If the puppy is 4 months old he likely needs one more parvovirus vaccine and then two weeks after the second vaccine he probably will have effective immunity against the virus. You may want to see if the rescue can house him for a few more months before you bring him home, or they may have another fully vaccinated dog available.
