Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Schipperke | Male | unneutered | 13 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

Hi My dog has a pretty bad cough that comes and goes and it's like something is in his throat and he is trying to get it out but I don't know what's wrong as far as I know he has never had something like this before. Is there anything I can give him to help his cough?

Oh poor Kipper! I would be concerned that this chronic cough could be caused by something serious such a cardiac disease, heartworm disease, chronic bronchitis, or even cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibility in a senior dog like Kipper. Without knowing the cause of the cough, there's not something I can recommend for it, as the treatment needs to be tailored to the cause. I would have Kipper seen by the vet tomorrow for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. Using these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing the cough and then can discuss treatment plans with you.
