Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 6 lbs
Hi I have a 11 week old pure french bulldog. He is very small a week ago was 5.7 lbs. I switched his food over to a much better brand immediately after getting him. I was not informed to graduitly do the switch to the new food. He has had diahrea and also some times traces of blood in his stool. After researching online it seems this is somewhat common in french bulldog puppies. Please give me some professional advice. Thanks

Rapidly switching food can cause the GI upset you are seeing in Griffey, and I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Also make sure that he is up to date on his deworming treatments, as that can cause bloody diarrhea. Should he start vomiting as well, I would be concerned that the vomiting and his blood diarrhea could be caused by parovirus, which is a life threatening infection in puppies. Should he start to vomit and/or becomes very lethargic and anorexic, take him into the vet immediately. Home remedy: Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet (the new food).

Poor Hank! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions but the most common include eating something he shouldn't have, bacterial over growth or parasites (worms and giardia). It's also possible it's related to the new diet. Due to the presence of blood, I recommend to have Hank examined by the veterinarian. Try to remember to take in a stool sample. The doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth and then give appropriate treatment. Other diagnostics may be recommended as well. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. I hope Hank starts feeling better quickly! please feel free to post any additional questions!

As long as he is otherwise well I would feed a bland diet of chicken and rice and a probiotic fiber supplement such as fortiflora for the next few days. Diarrhea is quite common in puppies and is rarely of concern unless they are weak or vomiting. Be sure to keep up to date with deworming medications also
